Discipleship and Leadership

I was born in Ukraine in Mariupol city in 1975, in period of the
Soviet Union. I had very various intereststs in my childhood. A couple
of years I was interested in Biology, I even reared different animals
at home. But in the age of 12 I took a great interest in Physics. I was
very interested in the world structure and it's origin. I took part in
different physics contests pretty successful. I was also interested in
math. In the age of 14 I wrote a small research about the solution of
differential equations. In general I was interested in everything that
was logical, everything that slightly opened a curtain of mystery over
how everything was organized. I almost didn't attend school in my last
years, I had an individual schedule. I entered university on a physical
faculty without any exams. I was interested in programming since my
childhood. During my last years of school I was usually sitting at my
mom's work and programed. At that time the most cool processor was
8086. When I was on my first year of University I wrote a valid
debugger on Assembler. That was my first really big program.

Our fascination with celebrities often becomes personality cult. One of the things which I simply do not understand about American politics is the messianic fervor which seems to flow through the presidential process. Can one person really solve the problems of a nation? That leadership cult also flows through the church. So much teaching on leadership seems to have as its goal the creation of dependency! We have our own versions of the celebrity, personality, leadership cults!
In John 16:7, Jesus is telling the disciples that "It is to your
advantage that I go away". After three years with Jesus, after all the
miracles and after all the dreams of the Kingdom it comes to this? How
could it possibly be better without Jesus? How could it possibly be
better without the moment by moment flesh and blood presence of Jesus?

As I began to think about leadership for simple, organic churches, one
major thought came to my mind. Jesus was a cross-cultural
revolutionary who came and turned the world upside down. One only has
to read the Sermon on the Mount to understand that following Christ
makes no worldly sense – to be poor in spirit, to rejoice when
persecuted, and to mourn are all counter-cultural ways of life and
thinking. And, this Jesus is our best example for leadership. I have
always been amazed that during discussions on leadership people so
often revert to examples from the Old Testament and examples from
successful organizational leadership rather than simply focusing on
what Jesus said and did. Is not Jesus our greatest and best example?
And, His example is that He had no political or organizational power,
no wealth, no school, no position, nor any possessions. He had no
authority except that authority which was derived from His
relationships.

Recently there has been a lot of dialogue on the role of leadership. What is this thing called leadership? Who leads? Who follows? What difference does it make? Who cares? The question of leadership always leads into a lively debate. The great urgency always comes down to-who the heck is in charge around here?
My intention here is to share some of my thoughts on the role of leadership.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD
"In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes." Judges 21:25 You may have heard this scripture read as descriptive of a problem to be solved by establishing a king and often the person reading it is presenting themselves as the king that you need to submit to in order to solve the problem! In reality it is simply two statements placed side by side. It was true that there was no king in Israel. It was true that everyone was doing whatever he pleased.

Leadership in the Relational Church. What did Jesus have in mind when he spoke of leadership among the incredible community of the Body of Christ?
Here is the best definition I've ever heard of spiritual leadership: If you were going to be caught in your worst failure, who would you want to catch you?
If you really want to experience the fullness of life in Jesus, wouldn't you want someone who would treat you as gently as Jesus treated the woman at the well while offering you the truth in a way that you could understand and follow into God's freedom?

Editors Note:
This is a very challenging article that asks some very good questions. It may make some pastors very uncomfortable, and at first read you may not fully agree with what is written here because of what you have seen and experienced.
Our hope is that this article will simply motivate you to study freshly the topic of leadership in the local church. The questions before us are not about model or method, but more importantly-does the way we lead our churches magnify Christ as the Head and allow for the true practice of the priesthood of all believers? Does the way we view leadership limit the multiplication of disciples and churches?
May we be open to allow God to speak to us freshly.

In our quest to be part of a powerful move of God's kingdom, we often are tempted to think the solution will come from a complex composite of things that produce the results we so desperately long for. We cry out to the heavens for a solution that will finally change the church forever. Many travel every year to new seminars and conferences, buying the latest books and binders full of new methods in our search for the answer. The primal scream of our hearts is a search for spiritual success that will ultimately change the world. To our query of the universe, Albert Einstein once commented, "When the solution is simple, God is answering." In this article, we will describe the practical ways our team-Church Multiplication Associates-has used to multiply and network house churches that saturate neighborhoods and nations with the message of Jesus Christ.

If we are going to transition from church-as-we-know-it (a box) to a dynamic Spirit-filled movement, we will also have to transition from leadership-as-we-know-it to something else. Alan Creech says the WHOLE thing has to be reinvented: I mean full-time, paid staff pastors who preach every Sunday and do pretty much all the ministry and stress themselves silly over every little thing in the community. I think this will kill us if we keep this up. It's beginning to happen, but we've really got to re-envision what it means to be a pastor, leader, elder, whatever in our new churches. I don't think we can afford to keep the old pastoral paradigm alive any more. We can't do that and expect to happen what we want to happen in these communities.

For true success in missional churches one of the key issues comes down to "the people". I still remember talking years ago with one of my mentors. I asked him,
