Commentary on One Pastor System 9 г., 2 мес. назад Репутация: 0
This morning I was reading in my quiet time these words that Jesus said to some of the religious leaders of his day-“ You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.” (Mark 7:9) “ You have invalidated the Word of God by your tradition which you have handed down, and you do many things such as that.” (Mark 7:13)

It is quite possible that we as genuine Christians,in the present day, invalidate the Word of God the same way.

Jesus said these strong words on the subject of leadership:

6"They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men. 8"But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10"Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. 11"But the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12" Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. 13"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.
Matthew 23:6-13

25But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.26"It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,27and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
Matthew 20:25-28

These are commands of Jesus, yet traditions have developed over hundreds of years that set aside these clear instructions of Jesus.

1) Many churches have one pastor or a senior pastor that wield great authority and power in the church. Church members therefore often refer to the church by the name of the pastor- Oleg’s Church, Maxim’s Church, or Bill’s Church. They see the pastor as the Head of the church, not Jesus. They often depend on the pastor as their “priest” rather than understanding their own priesthood. In the plan of God, and in order to fulfill these commands of Jesus, the early church practiced a plurality of leadership. There was always a group of elders in a church, not one pastor. They served in a way that preserved the Headship of Christ, and that prevented authoritarianism.
2) There is often a hierarchy of leadership in today’s churches and denominational structures, whereas the elders ( quite simply, spiritually older ones who demonstrated the character qualities listed in I Timothy 3 and Titus 1) of the New Testament were servant leaders among the flock, not over the flock.
3) There is a clergy-laity distinction in many churches that invalidates the heart of God to see Christ as the true Head of the church, and all His people as true priests using their gifts to build up one another and to go into the world proclaiming the gospel and making disciples. We do not see this clergy-laity distinction in the scriptures and this tradition has made the average church member see the church as a provider of “goods and services” for his spiritual life, rather than seeing the church as a living body of which Christ is the Head and of which he is to be a very vital and active part.

It is my regular prayer that churches would look freshly to the clarity and directness of Jesus words-
“ it(lording authority) is not so among you”
“ only one is your leader and that is Christ”,
and that they would rid themselves of the traditions of hierarchy and controlling authority that take away from the Headship and glory of Jesus Christ and that prevent people from being the priests, laborers, and disciple-makers that God wants them to be.
